〔出くわす， 鉢合せする， すれちがう， 巡り合う， ぶつかる， 落ち合う， 待ち合わせる， 密会する， デートする， 再会する〕

**meet

Until ［Till］ we meet again! 《やや正式》ではまたお会いしましょう《◆ Until ［Till］ the next time! の方が口語的》

We could meet again tomorrow. 明日また会うことにしたらどうですか

Two months have passed since we last met. 前に会ってから2か月経った.

I won't be seeing him again. 彼に二度と会うことはないでしょう《◆ I won't see... では「会うつもりはない」の意になるのが普通》

We would never see Sam's like again. サムのような人には二度と会えないだろう

I want to see you again. また会いたいです《◆目上の人には I hope to see... が普通》.

あう【会う･逢う･遭う】

1 〔約束して対面する･面談する〕 see sb; meet sb; have an appointment 《with sb》.

●会ったことのない人 somebody one has never met; a stranger.

●ちょっとの時間なら木曜日の放課後に会えるよ. I can see you for a few minutes after class on Thursday.

・彼女のお父さんとは近ごろ少しも[あまり]会わない. I don't see her father at all [I hardly see her father] these days.

・彼には 1 週間会っていない. I haven't seen him for a week. | It is a week since I saw him (last).

・君に会えるかと思ってやってきた. I hoped I would find you [would be able to see you] here. | I came on the chance of finding you [on the chance that I would be able to see you] here.

・私は首相に会見を申し込んだが, まさか本当に会えるとは思わなかった. I applied for an interview with the Prime Minister, but I never dreamed that I could really meet him [her].

・また明日会おう. Let's meet again tomorrow.

・彼女には全然会ったことがない. I've never met [seen] her before. | She is a complete stranger (to me).

・彼には会わないようにしなさい. Keep out of his way. | Avoid [Avoid meeting] him.

・どんなにあなたに会いたかったことか. I have been dying to see you! | I have missed you terribly.

・会ってみればいい人だよ. You will find him [her] very nice. | You'll like him [her] when you meet him [her].

・新聞記者が来ても彼は会わなかった. He refused to talk to any journalists.

・直接本人に会わなければだめだ. You should go and talk to her [him] directly [personally, face-to-face]. | You must visit her [him] yourself.

・僕に会いたくなったらこの浜辺においで. 僕は天気さえよければいつもここでサーフィンやってるから. If you ever want to see me, come down here to the beach. Providing the weather is good enough I'm always down here surfing.

・会うは別れの始め. Meeting is the beginning of separation.

・3 時にお得意さんと会う約束がある. I am seeing [meeting] one of my customers at 3:00.

・彼は彼女と土曜の午後に会う(デートの)約束をした. He arranged to meet her on Saturday afternoon.

・父は時々居留守を使って人に会わない. My father often avoids seeing [meeting] people by pretending he is out [away from home].

・彼はいまだに愛人とこっそり会っている. He's still seeing [meeting] his girl on the quiet. | 《文》 He is still having secret assignations with his mistress.

・東京までメール友だちに会いに行くことになったよ. I am going to Tokyo to meet an E-mail friend.

・君とは初めて会った気がしない. It doesn't feel as if this is the first time I've met you [the first time we've met, the first time we've seen each other].

2 〔偶然出会う〕 meet sb 《by chance》; 《口》 bump into sb; come across [on, upon] sb [sth]; 《文》 encounter sb [sth]; 《米》 《口》 light on [upon] sb [sth].

●ここで会ったが百年目. We meet again! This is the end of the road for you [Your luck has run out]. | There is no escape; this meeting seals your doom.

・ここへ来る途中で田中さんに会った. I met [《口》 bumped into, ran into, 《文》 encountered] Mr. Tanaka on my way here.

・バーでひょっこり田中先生に会った. I happened to meet [《口》 bumped into] Professor Tanaka in a bar.

・ずっと会っていなかった小学校の級友に大都会の真ん中で会えるとは思ってもいなかった. It never crossed my mind that I might [would, could] meet [come across, 《口》 bump into] a classmate from my primary school whom I had not seen for many years, right in the middle of the city.

・いい所で君に会った. I'm glad I've found you [《口》 I've bumped into you]. | It's lucky that we met here.

・こんな所でお会いするなんて. Fancy meeting you here! | What a coincidence meeting you here!

3 〔好ましくない事態に遭遇する〕 have 《an accident, a crash》; be [get] involved in 《an accident, a fight》; be in 《an earthquake, a war》; suffer [undergo] 《pain, an unpleasant experience》; go through 《a bad experience》; be [get] 《badly treated, punished, etc.》; have [get] 《sth stolen》; be [get] caught 《in a storm, in a civil war》; face [be confronted by] 《a crisis》.

●どろぼう[盗難]にあう have something stolen (from one's house); have one's house burgled; have something stolen by burglars; be robbed [burglarized, burgled]

・私は関西旅行中に大地震の被害にあった. While I was on a journey in the Kansai there was a major earthquake and I was badly affected. | During a trip to the Kansai I was involved in [《口》 hit by] the Great Earthquake (and suffered losses).

・24 時間営業の店が強盗の被害にあうケースが増えている. Robberies at 24-hour stores are increasingly common. | Stores open 24-hours a day are suffering an increase in robberies.

・ひとり暮らしの老人が詐欺にあって大切な財産を失った. An old man [woman] living by himself [herself] was swindled [《口》 conned] out of valued possessions.

・途中で検問にあったとかで, 彼は遅れてやってきた. There was a road check or something on the way, and he arrived late. | He had to go through a checkpoint or something on the way, so he got here [there] late.

・川を渡ったところで一斉射撃にあって, われわれは敗退を余儀なくされた. When we crossed the river we encountered [met] heavy gunfire from all sides and there was no escaping defeat.

・部隊は不意討ちにあって総崩れとなった. The unit was taken by surprise [suffered a surprise attack] and there was a general rout.

・危ない目にあう be exposed to danger; have a dangerous experience; get into a dangerous situation

・こわい目にあう have a frightening [terrifying] experience

・ひどい目にあう have a bad [terrible, dreadful] experience; 《口》 have a bad [rough] time

・すりにあう have [get] one's pocket picked

・夕立ち[雪崩(_なだれ)]にあう be [get] caught in an evening shower [an avalanche].

●(電車で)痴漢にあった. She was [got] molested [《俗》 felt up] (on the train). | I [She] was [got] felt up [groped] (on the train).

・船は嵐にあって沈んでしまった. The ship was caught in a storm and sank [went down in a storm].

・(交通)事故にあわないよう気をつけなさい. Be careful not to have an accident [a traffic accident].

・猛烈な反対にあって法案は撤回された. The bill met fierce opposition [was fiercely opposed] and it was withdrawn.

・渋滞にあって到着が 30 分遅れた. I got caught in a traffic jam and was thirty minutes late.

・彼は不幸な目にあった. Something bad [tragic, unfortunate] happened to him. | 《文》 A misfortune befell him.

・火事にあって蔵書をおおかた焼いてしまった. He [She] had the greater part of his [her] library burnt in a fire. | Most of her [his] books were destroyed in a fire.
